Malta, Hal Far – Valletta
Every year hundreds of migrants and asylum seekers, the vast majority of whom are Somali, land in Malta. Most of them are taken to detention centres where they can be held for up to 18 months.
Around 3,000 people also live in open centres, where they receive accommodation for up to one year. Some people also receive an allowance, depending on their status.
MSF teams currently provide mental health support to people staying in these open centres. Staff are also developing community based mental health work to try to improve the general mental health and wellbeing of the population. Between January and June 2010, over 450 individual psychological consultations were provided.
