The town of Burco has the biggest public hospital for many miles, serving a population of at least 350,000.

Last year, medical teams from Medecins Sans Frontieres/Doctors without borders joined the Ministry of Health staff at this 8-ward hospital to start providing high quality free services. Now Somali staff work alongside medics from as far as China and Norway to ensure patients with medical emergencies get quality free healthcare.

The emergency room is the first point of call for many patients – over 4 and a half thousand were seen there in the first 9 months of 2012.
